Our History
The Santa Cruz Indian Council was founded as a non-profit in 1979. From it’s inception to 1985 the council contributed a substantial presence in the community in which members and their children participated in parades, exhibition dancing in full Native American Regalia, presentations to schools as well as honoring graduating Native American students in order to preserve and share cultures and traditions.
In the 1985 the council hosted the first Red Road Powwow at Casa De Fruta resort in Hollister. By the early 1990’s, the Powwow had become the Red Road Powwow “Celebration of Sobriety”. Members of the recovery community, who were on the Red Road path to recovery (native & non-native), were encouraged to participate in the Red Road Celebration by way of the powwow’s 12 step meetings, talking circles and sobriety roll call. In 2002 we were honored to have the founder of White Bison, Don Coyhis and the Hundred Eagle Feather Hoop at our Red Road Powwow “Celebration of Sobriety”.
In 2004 the SCIC members chose to redirect their efforts toward realizing the vision of the original founding elders and parents as described in our Mission Statement. Extensive efforts have been made to review the council infrastructure and explore ways to better serve the youth of our area.
More recently, In addition to hosting our annual Intertribal Gathering and Youth Powwow held in Santa Cruz County each June, we are actively engaged in collaborating with the Santa Cruz county Native American community to provide educational and cultural opportunities for the Seventh Generation here throughout the year.
